Diet for breeding African Greys

I used to breed a lot of African Grey parrots and have just been asked what to feed to get the best results. I used to feed a good quality parrot diet with over 30 ingredients but low in sunflowers and add a pich of vitamin powder to this each day.  Most important is not to over feed as they will look fine and go through all breeding signs but eggs maybe infertile. They should run out of seed half way through the afternoon.

I fed on average half a mug of seed per pair of birds a day which is not much. Also fed a small amout of natures harvest soak mixture ( a teas spoon per bird) as Greys are very bad at eating fruit but it shold always be offered. Also one palm nut per birds per day.  As for calcium I gave 3 drops of liquid calcium in the water once a week and twice a week when breeding.

 

My birds after 6 months were put outside in flight to get fit before putting them back down to breed. At this time when I caught them I always check the breasts to see if their weight was correct, to find out if I was over feeding which is easily done.

How much calium to give to my parrot?

A very common question. With most species of parrots there is enough extra calcium in a good quality vitamin supplement. You can give extra in the breeding season by adding 2 or 3 drops of liquid calcium in the drinking water once or twice a week.  Afircan Greys do need extra calcium compared with other parrot species but do not get carried away as too much is dangerous. I had 50 breeding pairs of African Greys and I gave a powdered calcium supplement in the seed once a week and twice a week in the breeding season. The same can be given with the liquid calcium, 2/3 drops in the water every week and twice a week in the breeding season.

SEED CLEANER FOR HOOVERS (CODE OBN31)

This is one of our fastest selling new products and we have sold over 30 in a few weeks.  How to use them?  We get asked a lot and I will produce a short video clip but we have sold out so a few words to help our customers who have them.  Basically the shoot on the side which you pull down is where the seed enters the unit. The hole is not very big on purpose as it is only meant for small seed mixtures not parrot diets.

The hoover is attached to the hole on top of the unit. The air flow is ajusted simply by opening the swood lide on top of the unit. Fully open means most of the air bypasses the cleaner and only very light huskd will be removed. You sinply slowly close the top wood slide until the seed husks are removed. If you hoover is powerful and you completely close it you may remove everything into the hoover.  

Once you have finished turn the hoover off and open the wooden slide on the side if the unit and the good clean seed will flow out. Any questions at all please contact me.
